As you are planning for next school year, please see items below. Children could benefit from your knowledge and enthusiasm!
BOOK CLUB VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!
Do you love to read and spend time with children? Are you interested in helping to foster a love of reading by participating in a monthly book club with 5th grade students in local schools? This is a terrific volunteer opportunity! Training occurs in the summer. For more information, contact Debbie Bloom at email@example.com or Liz Rumizen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE – JOIN THE CAST OF READER’S THEATER: NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED
Please consider volunteering for this short-term, interactive theater and literacy program for fourth grade students throughout the area. No theater experience necessary; we will train you! Groups meet once a week for three weeks, performing for their classmates at the final meeting. This is a “sometimes” project that can work well with a busy schedule. New chairs are Linda Barnett at email@example.com and Janice Hirshon at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please contact them if you are interested.
COME ON BOARD THE IMAGINATION EXPRESS
If you are looking for a volunteer position that brings joy to children and yourself, consider joining “Imagination Express” this coming school year. We are a group that does an after-school program at St. Aloysius School once a month. We meet and drive together, bringing a snack, story, music and an art project to a group of young children for an hour. No experience needed! Contact Adrienne Wasserman at 216-409-0398 or email@example.com.
BECOME A READING BUDDY!
At Reading Buddies, an adult reads with a first or second grade child for a short period that fits his or her attention span. This program helps with fluency and love of reading and is done at two Cleveland schools that are easy to get to with adequate parking. Contact Rita Langer at firstname.lastname@example.org or Liz Rumizen at email@example.com if you are interested.
SPIN A YARN WITH DIGKNITTY (Knitters)!
Our busy knitters work tirelessly to provide warm clothing, blankets and comfort toys to many organizations who distribute them to families and children in need. If you would like to join us, contact Sandy Levine at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Digknitty is looking for organizations that would benefit from knitted items. Please contact Sandy Levine at email@example.com if you have any ideas or contacts.

INVEST IN PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN
Volunteer one-on-one with a PRE-K student to enhance his/her reading skills and kindergarten readiness. This is a once weekly or bi-weekly, one-hour assignment. Using a book and activities provided by the program, volunteers read with a student then complete the activities that reinforce comprehension and other literacy skills.
NCJW is currently working with two sites, one in Shaker Heights and one in Cleveland Heights. Fingerprinting, a background check and a one-hour training session are required. Please contact Heather Schlang at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested or for more information.
JOIN OPERATION WARM-UP – IT’S COOL TO HELP THE HOMELESS THIS WINTER!
It’s not too early to think about the homeless, who will lack warm clothing when Old Man Winter shows his ice-covered face. Operation Warm Up, administered by NCJW/Cleveland, answers the call by seeking hats, boots, gloves, socks, and long underwear, donated by more than 30 community sites and collected and distributed by NCJW/Cleveland.
Committee members will “adopt a site” – drop off a bin at a near-by site (temples, agencies, and organizations around town), check on it once or twice to collect items so that the bin is not overflowing, and then pick it up at the end of the drive. Members will be needed for other tasks as well.
Volunteers are the key to success. Join the kick off meeting for Operation Warm Up 2017. Bring your lunch and we will provide dessert. All are welcome to join this committee that engages in such a required and rewarding mission.
