National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) helped write and pass the Violence Against Women Act. And we’ve continued to lead on its reauthorization for 30 years. Because everyone should be safe from domestic violence.

On Sept. 12, NCJW attended the White House’s Violence Against Women Act 30th Anniversary celebration, with NCJW CEO Sheila Katz on stage with President Joe Biden. Watch President Biden’s and read Sheila’s statement, below.

“30 years ago, National Council of Jewish Women helped author and pass the original Violence Against Women Act. Now, three decades later, I’m honored to stand alongside President Biden, other Jewish organizations, and survivors as we celebrate the anniversary of this important legislation to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence and stalking and prevent future harm. But we’re not done yet.

The rates of sexual and domestic violence are still far too high. And, we must meet the needs of all survivors — LGBTQ, older adults, survivors with disabilities, immigrants, Native people — to provide safety and security for so many at risk. Just as National Council of Jewish Women showed up then, we will continue to show up now — to honor the legacy of this groundbreaking law and fulfill its promise so that every person can live free from violence, harassment, and assault.”
