Guest columnist Kelly Markowitz is co-vice president of retail operations at NCJW/CLE and co-chair of Designer Dress Days. Her love for fashion and volunteering helps support people in the community. She encourages readers to donate to NCJW/CLE at the Thiftique Showroom, 26055 Emery Road (open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays).

It’s true. I find (a lot) of joy in clothes. And I think clothes can help say a lot about you — without you ever having to speak!

As co-vice president of retail at the National Council of Jewish Women/Cleveland (NCJW/CLE), I find the most joy in seeing donations of clothing to our organization. And in realizing that others, too, will find joy — and confidence — from the items.

NCJW/CLE’s mission is to improve the lives of women, children and families. One way we support our community is through our retail components.

We are home to Thriftique Showroom, one of the largest upscale resale shops in Cleveland. There, people find true treasures — from women’s and men’s clothing to home goods and furniture.

We also host one of the most talked about annual four-day designer sales in Cleveland — Designer Dress Days. (Psst: Save the date for Oct 8, 10, 11 and 12). People come from all over the state (and even as far as New York) to score designer handbags, clothing or accessories at a fraction of their original cost.

Without donations from the community, we wouldn’t be able to offer these fashionable finds. Our dedicated donors are the reason we have a thrift store and an annual sale — and ultimately the reason we can fund good work in the community and uphold our mission.

As you’re spring cleaning, I leave you with these three tips to keep in mind — knowing that your donation can repair the world, one fashionable find at a time.

Empty out your whole closet: It may seem crazy to lay your whole wardrobe on your bed, but that is the best way to actually see what you own. The only way to totally declutter is to know everything you have. You might be surprised to find out just how many pairs of black pants you’ve accumulated over the years!

The rule of 12: If you haven’t worn something in 12 months, it’s time to say sayonara! I promise, you won’t even know it’s gone. Don’t hold onto items in case you “might” come back around to them. In the words of Marie Kondo, if something doesn’t bring you joy anymore, know that it might bring happiness to someone else.

Consider where your donations are going: Like NCJW/CLE, there are many organizations that depend on donations to do good work in the community. On the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, donations are helping people in need more than ever before. And donating feels better when you know that your clothes are going to a good cause.
