WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued its opinion in United States v. Skrmetti, weakening crucial protections under the 14th Amendment and contradicting its own settled precedents. Darcy Hirsh, Senior Director of Government Relations and Advocacy at National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) — one of the nation’s leading Jewish feminist civil rights organizations, representing 250,000 advocates from across the country — issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision strikes a devastating blow to the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, with an immediate result felt by transgender young people who, with their parents, will be barred from seeking life-saving medical treatment. This is catastrophic — and even deadly — for millions of young people and their families. The ruling not only harms young people, but it sets a terrifying precedent that puts the rights and dignity of trans youth in jeopardy. And, it could impact other discrimination cases in the lower courts, making it harder for vulnerable groups to seek equal protection.
“As Jews, we are taught that every person is created b’tzelem Elohim — in the image of the Divine. That value demands a society where all people, including transgender people, are treated with dignity and care. NCJW’s 250,000 advocates across the country will not stand by while the rights and futures of LGBTQ+ individuals are debated in courtrooms and stripped away by policymakers. We have long fought for every person’s right to make their own decisions about their body, life, and future and we will redouble our efforts, guided by love and determination, until that vision becomes a reality.”
